Current fabrication techniques, such as photolithography and micro-contact printing, are limited to generating simple geometries or 2D patterns. Stereolithography is best known for its ability to print large objects such as tools and car parts. The difference, says Chen, is in the micro- and nanoscale resolution required to print tissues that mimic nature's fine-grained details, including blood vessels, which are essential for distributing nutrients and oxygen throughout the body. Without the ability to print vasculature, an engineered liver or kidney, for example, is useless in regenerative medicine. With DOPsL, Chen's team was able to achieve more complex geometries common in nature such as flowers, spirals and hemispheres. Other current 3D fabrication techniques, such as two-photon photopolymerization, can take hours to fabricate a 3D part.
The biofabrication technique uses a computer projection system and precisely controlled micromirrors to shine light on a selected area of a solution containing photo-sensitive biopolymers and cells. This photo-induced solidification process forms one layer of solid structure at a time, but in a continuous fashion. The technology is part of a new biofabrication technology that Chen is developing under a four-year, $1.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (R01EB012597). The Obama administration in March launched a $1 billion investment in advanced manufacturing technologies, including creating the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute with $30 million in federal funding to focus on 3D printing. The term "additive manufacturing" refers to the way 3D structures are built layering very thin materials.

We had a baby shower for my friend yesterday, and it?s one of the most fun parties I?ve ever planned. I co-hosted with some of my best friends in the world. We shared responsibilities, bounced ideas off one another, and had a lot of fun in the planning and prep.
The party itself was fun but went all too quickly! Which, I think is definitely the sign of a great event. The decor by Hoosier Party Girl was simply amazing. I had a blast planning the food, featuring a yummy chocolate fountain. And, the afternoon went smoothly with a great group of friends.

Germany's state coffers are still bursting, despite the ongoing euro crisis, with tax revenues increasing by 8.6 percent over the past year, figures released on Monday show.
The German taxman received ?311.4 billion between January and July - five percent more than the same period last year, slightly more than the four percent increase forecast last year.
The tax bump is being put down to rising employment and increased income.
But tax income is not necessarily a reliable sign of economic health, since it often lags behind other indicators. Germany's economic growth slowed down in the second quarter of the year, which is likely to affect state finances next year, the government said.
"The whole picture painted by economic indicators suggests that the German economy could slow down during the rest of the year," a Finance Ministry statement said.
Exports, in particular would probably be affected by the recession in other eurozone countries, the statement added.
But there are more positive signs coming from consumption figures. "On the back of increasing employment and wages, which are reflected in the dynamic development of income tax revenue, it seems that the preconditions are there for a continuation of positive consumption development," the statement said.
But despite increasing riches, the German government is apparently planning to remain frugal next year. TheBild newspaper said on Monday that the government's 2013 budget was likely to spend ?302.2 billion - ?10.5 billion less than the current year.
The newspaper also said that Finance Minister Wolfgang Sch?uble was set to borrow ?18.8 billion in the new year - ?13.3 billion less than in 2012.
Next year's budget is not expected to be released until November.

"Even though we have done very little to decrease our emissions, the Earth continues to lend us a helping hand," lead author Ashley Ballantyne of the University of Colorado told Reuters.
Carbon soaked up from the atmosphere by the seas and by plants and soil on land rose to an estimated 5 billion tonnes in 2010 from 2.4 billion in 1960, according to the findings by his team of U.S.-based scientists in the journal Nature.
Over the 50-year period, nature had soaked up 55 percent of mankind's greenhouse gas emissions that totalled 350 billion tonnes, mostly carbon dioxide (CO2) from burning fossil fuels, it said.
Knowing how nature reacts to rising concentrations of man-made greenhouse gases in the air is vital to understanding climate change, blamed for raising temperatures and more floods, droughts, heatwaves and rising sea levels.
The figures were in line with data by the Global Carbon Project, grouping scientists around the world, which put nature's rising absorption at 5 billion tonnes of carbon in 2010, Corinne Le Quere, co-chair of the project, told Reuters.
Plants, both on land and in the seas, use carbon to grow. Ocean waters also absorb carbon dioxide.
"The Earth is pretty resilient," Ballantyne said. "The flip side is that if the Earth wasn't taking up all that CO2 we would be experiencing much more warming over the last 50 years than we have observed."
The report said: "Several recent studies suggest that rates of carbon uptake by the land and ocean have remained constant or declined in recent decades. Other work, however, has called into question the reported decline.
"As of 2010 there is no empirical evidence that carbon uptake has started to diminish on the global scale."
While the uptake by the oceans and land has doubled, human emissions have quadrupled in the past 50 years. China, the United States, the European Union and India are top emitters.
Le Quere, also director of the Tyndall Center in Britain, said the main point of controversy was how far nature's "sinks", like the oceans and forests, would keep on soaking up carbon.
But she said the new study "doesn't go very far" towards answering the question of when nature would be saturated.
In a warmer world, changes in ocean chemistry or faster rotting of plants might stop overall carbon absorption. When that happens, heat-trapping emissions of CO2 to the atmosphere would stay there, accelerating warming.
Average world temperatures have risen by 0.8 degree Celsius (1.4 F) since the Industrial Revolution. The warmest 13 years since records began in the mid-19th century have been in the past 15, according to United Nations data.
Ballantyne said his findings focused on the rising uptake by the oceans and the land. Other recent studies "suggest that sinks will become saturated within the coming century, maybe in the next 30 to 50 years," he said.
And there were signs of big oscillations in carbon uptake by nature in the past 20 years, perhaps linked to an eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines in 1991 and a strong El Nino warming in the Pacific Ocean in 1998, the study said.
Ballantyne suggested the continued high rate of absorption could be a sign that some areas yet to be studied in detail, such as the Arctic, may be taking up more carbon. In the Arctic, summer sea ice is shrinking and permafrost is thawing.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Mandy Hauck turned 25 on Wednesday, but she's avoiding Facebook and her happy birthday messages to steer clear of Olympic spoilers about her favorite sport, fencing.
Hauck has also deleted her iPhone apps for CNN and ESPN, opting for news from the London Games the old-fashioned way, via TV coverage that's time-delayed by NBC for prime time.
The network is making live streams of the action available in real time online. Hauck's hanging tough, though, in favor of doing actual work during the day as the marketing communications manager for a software company in Atlanta, a job that requires her to stay on Twitter while she attempts to stay away from its main page and trending topics.
"I enjoy the experience of sitting with my family and friends in front of the television and cheering for the athletes as if they were competing live," said Hauck, a former college fencer who has been following two-time American gold medalist Mariel Zagunis in London. "It's much more entertaining and enjoyable that way!"
It's also incredibly difficult with social media in full flower. Olympic spoilers have people turning off phone alerts, hiding their iPads and shushing co-workers in search of simpler times, when screaming at the TV during nail-biting competition was a sport unto itself.
Pervasive spoilers even solicited an apology from NBC's Olympics executive producer, Jim Bell. He tweeted a mea culpa for a Monday night gaffe, when the network ran a "Today" show teaser with swimmer Missy Franklin showing off her gold medal ? just before the network aired the race where she won it.
While angry tweeters have taken to ? yes, Twitter ? to grouse about spoilers, Paul Redfern at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania has entered what he calls "my Olympic dark period" on social media. That's not an easy thing when your job description includes overseeing social media engagement. He's also the dad of two young kids.
"Watching the prime-time broadcast is a family tradition," he said. "The Summer Olympics are almost always on for part of our vacation and we always gather as a family to watch each evening."
Redfern is leaving the tweeting on behalf of the college to another person in the office for the duration.
Lisa McTigue in Los Angeles is a former competitive swimmer who truly loves sitting down to soak up the Olympics on TV. Unfortunately, she's also an Internet marketing consultant who can't do her job without Facebook, Twitter and other social media.
"All the excitement I have felt for the Olympics in previous years is completely gone," she said. "In previous years, I felt inspired to get back in the pool. This year, that inspiration and excitement is ? meh."
Despite complaints, NBC's corporate owners said Wednesday that they expect to break even on the London games after once predicting they'd take a $200 million loss. On Tuesday night, 38.7 million people tuned in.
Count Rob Holliday among the Olympic traditionalists. He, too, has turned off push alerts and kept Twitter and Facebook use to a minimum. He's also avoiding major online news sites and turns off the radio and TV when anchors issue Olympic spoiler alerts.
"I thought it was a fairly airtight plan," he said. "After jumping through all those technological hoops, I walked in to my daughter's pediatrician's office only to hear a woman say, "'Guess what? Team USA won the gold in women's gymnastics!' Argh!!"
Graduate student Shraddha Sankhe, who's spending the summer in Washington, D.C., as a communications intern for a nonprofit, considers it mission impossible to avoid Olympic spoilers, so she's going with it.
She's been plugging in to social media big time to follow results and watching live feeds online. "It doesn't make sense to wait for the results to be 'seen' on network television a few hours later," Sankhe said. "Internet more than makes up for a cable subscription these days for students like me."
Sankhe caught the opening ceremony live via BBC One using a link forwarded by friends on Twitter.
Olympic purist Jennifer Chang in Saratoga, Calif., can't afford to go dark online due to her communications job for a medical research foundation. But she's curating the Twitter feeds she follows. She's temporarily dumping the ones that are spilling news without spoiler warnings in favor of those using the broadest terms possible to announce results while providing links to details within a tweet.
That, she said, leaves it up to her to link for further news while staying in touch online. "I appreciate that greatly."
Some Twitter fanatics are taking full advantage of filters available on Tweetdeck and other tools used to organize feeds.
Beth Laughlin, a former competitive gymnast, has gone dark on news feeds of all kinds as she intensely follows the sport. But her husband, Will Laughlin, turned out to be the spoiler.
"Halfway through my first cup of coffee, a New York Times alert popped up on my iPad: U.S. women win team gold. The words fell out of my mouth before I knew what they meant or could gulp them back down," he said.
"My wife cocked her head sideways in disgust and said, 'You just ruined it!' She still cheered and cried while watching the events unfold on TV, but it really wasn't the same."

The non-waiver trade deadline is coming. July 31, as usual. After a slow beginning to crazy season due to so many teams being in contention or erroneously believing so, the rumblings are getting louder. It?s great fun, yes?
Over the next couple of weeks, we will obviously be writing individual posts for each of the trades that go down and a lot of the rumors that swirl. We?ll also, once trades start happening, put up a trade tracker so you can keep all the deals straight. But for now, let?s see if we can?t get a list of guys who are or who may be on the market.
This is a pretty expansive list, I think, as it includes guys like Josh Willingham who, just a few minutes ago, we noted probably won?t be traded. And it also includes guys ? especially some pitchers ? that no one may want. It further includes guys who haven?t had any trade heat around them but, man, they play for a team going nowhere, so maybe they SHOULD be dealt. Ergo, lots of Astros and Padres. It also includes a lot of Athletics because, in contention or not, the A?s like to deal people at the deadline. ?This isn?t merely list of names being tossed around actively. It?s more akin to a list of possible dudes your team may reasonably inquire about and/or want.
Point is, never say never. Teams don?t do dumb things at the rate they did ten years ago, but it?s not impossible to think that someone would offer the Twins a ridiculous return for Willingham, making them change their mind. SAN ANTONIO (July 10, 2012) Chemical intolerance contributes to the illnesses of 1 in 5 patients but the condition seldom figures in their diagnosis, according to clinical research directed by a UT Medicine San Antonio physician.
Clinical tools are available to identify chemical intolerance but health care practitioners may not be using them, lead author David Katerndahl, M.D., M.A., said. The study is in the July 9 issue of Annals of Family Medicine. UT Medicine is the clinical practice of the School of Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio.
Avoidance of triggers
The study's authors said physicians need to know how chemical intolerance affects certain people and understand that conventional therapies can be ineffective. Some patients would improve by avoiding certain chemicals, foods and even medical prescriptions, the authors said.
Patients with chemical intolerance go to the doctor more than others, are prone to having multi-system symptoms and are more apt to have to quit their job due to physical impairment, the authors said.
90-question survey
The study involved 400 patients who gave personal health information while waiting to be seen at primary care clinics in San Antonio, one in UT Medicine and the other in the University Health System. The researchers asked the patients to respond to 90 questions about their illnesses, mental health and ability to function.
In the end, the authors said, 20.3 percent of the patients questioned met the scientific criteria for chemical intolerance.
Patient inclusion
Researchers surveyed patients with chronic conditions such as allergies, asthma, diabetes and heart disease. They excluded patients who were at the clinics for acute conditions such as earaches, flu or bone fractures.
The origins of chemical intolerance have been the subject of much speculation, the authors acknowledge, but the condition is also understudied. People with chemical intolerance, or "CI," are highly sensitive to common substances such as cleaning products, tobacco smoke, fragrances, pesticides, new carpet and auto exhaust.
Important consideration in care
"Apart from the debate over causality, the fact that so many patients meet the criteria for chemical intolerance holds particular relevance for primary care providers," said Dr. Katerndahl, professor of family and community medicine who is supported by the Dr. Mario E. Ramirez Distinguished Professorship.
Chemically intolerant individuals often have symptoms that affect multiple organ systems simultaneously, especially the nervous system. Symptoms commonly include fatigue, changes in mood, difficulty thinking and digestive problems.

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) ? Count 'em: 7 seconds.
That's how long French Open runner-up Sara Errani "played" at Wimbledon on Wednesday against qualifier CoCo Vandeweghe of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. ? enough time to wrap up a 6-1, 6-3 victory in the first round.
How's that possible? Because action was suspended by rain a night earlier, with the 10th-seeded Errani at match point as the 132nd-ranked Vandeweghe served.
When they resumed, after the customary several-minute warmup ritual of baseline strokes, volleys, overheads and serves, Vandeweghe tossed up a ball and hit it into the net. Moments later, she hit her second serve into the net, too, to complete the double-fault that ended the match, right then and there ? leaving both women smiling and spectators guffawing. Errani joined in the laughter as she packed away her racket bag, and kept right on giggling during her news conference.
Asked by an Italian reporter to recount what happened, Errani said, justifiably: "There's not much to tell."
Asked by another whether she'd bothered to take a shower, Errani assured him she planned to later.
"I had talked to my coach to plan what I wanted to do in the match," Errani said, "but there was no need."
All in all, it was exactly the sort of unusual happening that Day 3 kept producing in what's shaping up as a wet and wild week at the All England Club. Another: Prince Charles visited his nation's most famous tennis club, something he hadn't done in 42 years.
Four of the top 13 seeded women were sent packing Wednesday, including 2011 U.S. Open champion Sam Stosur, 2011 French Open champion Li Na, and former No. 1-ranked Caroline Wozniacki.
The fifth-seeded Stosur's 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 loss to 72nd-ranked Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands means Australia will have zero men or women in the third round for the first time since 1939.
"It's a pretty woeful performance by all of us," said Stosur, the last of nine Australians in the tournament.
Wozniacki, who hadn't departed any Grand Slam tournament in the first round in more than five years, blew two match points in the second set and was beaten 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-4 by 37th-ranked Tamira Paszek of Austria. It was the first match of the fortnight played with the Centre Court's retractable roof closed.
"I had over two years where I was winning these matches," said No. 7 Wozniacki, who is dating 2011 U.S. Open golf champion Rory McIlroy and is still seeking her first major title. "I feel lately it's going the other way a little bit. It's not the first match this year where I have match points and not winning. You know, it's frustrating."
No. 11 Li lost to 52nd-ranked Sorana Cirstea of Romania 6-3, 6-4 in a second-round match, and 13th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova was beaten by 31st-ranked Klara Zakopalova of Czech Republic 6-4, 6-1 in the first round.
Adding to the anything-can-happen vibe, at least for the better part of an hour: No. 1 Maria Sharapova trailed 38th-ranked Tsvetana Pironkova throughout the first set, fended off five set points, and was ahead 7-6 (3), 3-1 when their second-round match was suspended by darkness.
That was one of four singles matches halted in progress, while four others were postponed entirely, adding to the backlog created by showers.
Before the rain came, Prince Charles sat in the Royal Box at Centre Court, watching six-time champion Roger Federer stumble once and awkwardly tweak his left knee but otherwise easily reach the third round by beating 68th-ranked Fabio Fognini of Italy 6-1, 6-3, 6-2.
"I'm fine. No pain, which is good," Federer said. "It could be dangerous with the left knee. I'm happy it was only basically a bruise to the ground, and not anything in the knee itself."
Federer and Fognini offered slightly stilted bows on their way off the court. Afterward, Federer chatted with and the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall for a few minutes, discussing tennis, polo and Federer's young twin daughters.
"They do brief you beforehand," said Federer, owner of a record 16 major championships, but none in the last 2 1/2 years. "I guess you don't do anything stupid. You behave. Obviously we were asked to bow, which is obviously no problem to do."
He said the royals "thought I played great ... which was unnecessary, but of course, I do appreciate it."
His performance was hardly out of the ordinary, of course. Nor was the 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory turned in by top-seeded and defending champion Novak Djokovic against 20-year-old American Ryan Harrison under the roof in the day's last match. Or straight-set wins by Andy Roddick to reach the second round and Kim Clijsters to get to the third.
Djokovic's second-round match against Harrison actually was much tighter than the score implies. Each man hit eight aces. Djokovic had one more winner, 31-30, and one more unforced error, 15-14. What made the difference? Djokovic converted 3 of 3 break points, and Harrison went 0 for 6.
"I was in trouble in the second set," Djokovic acknowledged. "It could have easily gone the other way."
But there were other interesting happenings.
Heather Watson, a British player ranked 103rd, became the first woman from the tournament's host country to reach the third round since 2002 by eliminating Jamie Hampton of the United States 6-1, 6-4.
Sloane Stephens, an unseeded 19-year-old American making her main-draw debut at the All England Club, saved five set points in the opener and wound up eliminating No. 23 Petra Cetkovska of the Czech Republic 7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-3. In the third set, Stephens was behind love-30 in four consecutive service games, before coming back to win each of them.
"I do still have some lapses," she said. "They're less now than I used to have in the past. I really don't get as upset when I lose points now. I'm not that emotional anymore."
No. 21-seeded Milos Raonic of Canada needed only slightly longer than Errani to finish off his rain-interrupted victory, coming back after a night's sleep to take the one game he was missing for a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 defeat of Santiago Giraldo of Colombia. Raonic is scheduled to face Sam Querrey of the United States in the second round Thursday.
Errani is supposed to back out there Thursday, too, facing Anne Keothavong of Britain.
Seems safe to say Errani will need to put in a little more time and effort on court ? weather permitting, of course.
