7 seconds put Errani in 2nd round; Federer wins

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) ? Count 'em: 7 seconds.

That's how long French Open runner-up Sara Errani "played" at Wimbledon on Wednesday against qualifier CoCo Vandeweghe of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. ? enough time to wrap up a 6-1, 6-3 victory in the first round.

How's that possible? Because action was suspended by rain a night earlier, with the 10th-seeded Errani at match point as the 132nd-ranked Vandeweghe served.

When they resumed, after the customary several-minute warmup ritual of baseline strokes, volleys, overheads and serves, Vandeweghe tossed up a ball and hit it into the net. Moments later, she hit her second serve into the net, too, to complete the double-fault that ended the match, right then and there ? leaving both women smiling and spectators guffawing. Errani joined in the laughter as she packed away her racket bag, and kept right on giggling during her news conference.

Asked by an Italian reporter to recount what happened, Errani said, justifiably: "There's not much to tell."

Asked by another whether she'd bothered to take a shower, Errani assured him she planned to later.

"I had talked to my coach to plan what I wanted to do in the match," Errani said, "but there was no need."

All in all, it was exactly the sort of unusual happening that Day 3 kept producing in what's shaping up as a wet and wild week at the All England Club. Another: Prince Charles visited his nation's most famous tennis club, something he hadn't done in 42 years.

Four of the top 13 seeded women were sent packing Wednesday, including 2011 U.S. Open champion Sam Stosur, 2011 French Open champion Li Na, and former No. 1-ranked Caroline Wozniacki.

The fifth-seeded Stosur's 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 loss to 72nd-ranked Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands means Australia will have zero men or women in the third round for the first time since 1939.

"It's a pretty woeful performance by all of us," said Stosur, the last of nine Australians in the tournament.

Wozniacki, who hadn't departed any Grand Slam tournament in the first round in more than five years, blew two match points in the second set and was beaten 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-4 by 37th-ranked Tamira Paszek of Austria. It was the first match of the fortnight played with the Centre Court's retractable roof closed.

"I had over two years where I was winning these matches," said No. 7 Wozniacki, who is dating 2011 U.S. Open golf champion Rory McIlroy and is still seeking her first major title. "I feel lately it's going the other way a little bit. It's not the first match this year where I have match points and not winning. You know, it's frustrating."

No. 11 Li lost to 52nd-ranked Sorana Cirstea of Romania 6-3, 6-4 in a second-round match, and 13th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova was beaten by 31st-ranked Klara Zakopalova of Czech Republic 6-4, 6-1 in the first round.

Adding to the anything-can-happen vibe, at least for the better part of an hour: No. 1 Maria Sharapova trailed 38th-ranked Tsvetana Pironkova throughout the first set, fended off five set points, and was ahead 7-6 (3), 3-1 when their second-round match was suspended by darkness.

That was one of four singles matches halted in progress, while four others were postponed entirely, adding to the backlog created by showers.

Before the rain came, Prince Charles sat in the Royal Box at Centre Court, watching six-time champion Roger Federer stumble once and awkwardly tweak his left knee but otherwise easily reach the third round by beating 68th-ranked Fabio Fognini of Italy 6-1, 6-3, 6-2.

"I'm fine. No pain, which is good," Federer said. "It could be dangerous with the left knee. I'm happy it was only basically a bruise to the ground, and not anything in the knee itself."

Federer and Fognini offered slightly stilted bows on their way off the court. Afterward, Federer chatted with and the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall for a few minutes, discussing tennis, polo and Federer's young twin daughters.

"They do brief you beforehand," said Federer, owner of a record 16 major championships, but none in the last 2 1/2 years. "I guess you don't do anything stupid. You behave. Obviously we were asked to bow, which is obviously no problem to do."

He said the royals "thought I played great ... which was unnecessary, but of course, I do appreciate it."

His performance was hardly out of the ordinary, of course. Nor was the 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory turned in by top-seeded and defending champion Novak Djokovic against 20-year-old American Ryan Harrison under the roof in the day's last match. Or straight-set wins by Andy Roddick to reach the second round and Kim Clijsters to get to the third.

Djokovic's second-round match against Harrison actually was much tighter than the score implies. Each man hit eight aces. Djokovic had one more winner, 31-30, and one more unforced error, 15-14. What made the difference? Djokovic converted 3 of 3 break points, and Harrison went 0 for 6.

"I was in trouble in the second set," Djokovic acknowledged. "It could have easily gone the other way."

But there were other interesting happenings.

Heather Watson, a British player ranked 103rd, became the first woman from the tournament's host country to reach the third round since 2002 by eliminating Jamie Hampton of the United States 6-1, 6-4.

Sloane Stephens, an unseeded 19-year-old American making her main-draw debut at the All England Club, saved five set points in the opener and wound up eliminating No. 23 Petra Cetkovska of the Czech Republic 7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-3. In the third set, Stephens was behind love-30 in four consecutive service games, before coming back to win each of them.

"I do still have some lapses," she said. "They're less now than I used to have in the past. I really don't get as upset when I lose points now. I'm not that emotional anymore."

No. 21-seeded Milos Raonic of Canada needed only slightly longer than Errani to finish off his rain-interrupted victory, coming back after a night's sleep to take the one game he was missing for a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 defeat of Santiago Giraldo of Colombia. Raonic is scheduled to face Sam Querrey of the United States in the second round Thursday.

Errani is supposed to back out there Thursday, too, facing Anne Keothavong of Britain.

Seems safe to say Errani will need to put in a little more time and effort on court ? weather permitting, of course.

Novel Catalytic Function of MUC1 for the Development of Cancer Therapeutics (TID-242)

This newly discovered function of MUC1 presents a novel target for the development of new cancer therapies and diagnostics.

MUC1 is a membrane bound mucin protein that is overexpressed in 90% of epithelial carcinomas.? Due to its overexpression in a wide variety of tumors, MUC1 is considered an ideal target for the development of new diagnostics and therapeutics.? Researchers at the University of Nebraska Medical Center recently discovered a new function of MUC1.? Research led by Dr. Michael Hollingsworth has identified a ubiquitin interacting motif common to E2-ubiquitin conjugating enzymes within the C-terminal fragment of MUC1.? They have demonstrated that MUC1 is conjugated to ubiquitin via a cysteine residue only in the presence of an E1 enzyme and they have identified potential targets for MUC1-regulated ubiquitylation, such as the transcription factor c-Jun.? The development of inhibitors against this newly discovered E2 active site within MUC1 could become useful therapeutics for the treatment of cancer.? Furthermore new diagnostics can be developed for ubiquitinylated forms of MUC1 and targets of ubiquitinylation of MUC1, which would be extremely useful for cancer prognosis, monitoring cancer progression, and identifying appropriate therapeutic strategies.

Christians United for Israel Withholds the Very Blessing They Claim to Want For Israel

Flag of IsraelInitially, let me tell you what I believe about the nation of Israel, so that I will not be misunderstood. (I?ve been called an anti-Semite twice in my life, both times for suggesting that people of Jewish descent need to hear the gospel.) I support the right of the nation of Israel to exist. I recognize that many Muslim nations and other anti-Semites deny that right and would like to wipe Israel off the map (and literally do so in children?s textbooks).

I believe Israel should aggressively defend herself against her enemies. I want justice to be done, and we should hold politicians accountable to behave righteously. Israel is an ally of the United States and should be treated accordingly. There is no question that many do target Israel because they think they are attacking God himself. The Holocaust occurred, and is worse than we thought.

Also, I try to be very careful about utilizing third party testimony against a brother or sister in Christ (or any other person for that matter). Accusations better be well-founded and from original and relevant sources. Most everything I want to say in this article is in response to the actual CUFI website or sources from within Christians United for Israel. I believe the goals and methods of CUFI are counter to the gospel and are draining resources from the only means of truly blessing the people of Israel: the preaching of the gospel. CUFI claims a membership of over a million people. How do I see the organization?

First, CUFI is devoid of the Christian gospel. Like many Christians in America, CUFI has replaced preaching with politics. In the end, they get everything backwards. Here is just a sampling:

Christians are called upon by CUFI to

?Learn, Pray and Share about Israel every day.?

?Therefore, CUFI On Campus equips and trains Christian students to become effective advocates for Israel on their campus, in their church, and in their community.?

?We hear over and over again from attendees who tell us that they never understood the Biblical mandate to support Israel and the Jewish people until they came to one of our events. Now, they write, the dots have been connected and they have a new focus and a new mission. (emphasis mine)?

It appears that CUFI has replaced ?Go and preach the gospel?first to the Jew? with ?go tell everybody about Israel.?

CUFI?s goal is to teach Americans about Israel, but there is NOTHING about teaching the people of Israel about Jesus. The Savior?s name is not mentioned once, even though He is the only true Hope of Israel. ?I did find the name Jesus mentioned once: one of the speakers for an event was named Jesus Infante (pronounced Hay-soos), and he was of Hispanic heritage.

Sadly, all of this is in keeping with the heretical doctrine that Pastor John Hagee (founder of CUFI) promotes, that the Jewish race can be saved apart from hearing and believing the gospel of Jesus Christ. He thinks Jews are saved by keeping the Law(!!), which they never were, not even during the Old Testament era. Abraham and David, like all other believers was saved by faith, according to Romans 4.

Here is Hagee?s viewpoint, according to the Houston Chronicle:

?I?m not trying to convert the Jewish people to the Christian faith,? he said?.

In fact, trying to convert Jews is a ?waste of time,? he said. ?The Jewish person who has his roots in Judaism is not going to convert to Christianity. There is no form of Christian evangelism that has failed so miserably as evangelizing the Jewish people. They (already) have a faith structure.?

Everyone else, whether Buddhist or Baha?i, needs to believe in Jesus, he says. But not Jews. Jews already have a covenant with God that has never been replaced by Christianity, he says.

?The Jewish people have a relationship to God through the law of God as given through Moses,? Hagee said. ?I believe that every Gentile person can only come to God through the cross of Christ. I believe that every Jewish person who lives in the light of the Torah, which is the word of God, has a relationship with God and will come to redemption.

?The law of Moses is sufficient enough to bring a person into the knowledge of God until God gives him a greater revelation. And God has not,? said Hagee, giving his interpretation of Romans 11:25. ?Paul abandoned the idea (of Jews knowing Christ). In the book of Romans, he said, `I am now going to go to the Gentiles from this time forward.? Judaism doesn?t need Christianity to explain its existence. But Christianity has to have Judaism to explain its existence.?

His position is a little unusual for evangelicals, who believe that the new covenant does supersede the old. Those who disagree with him are scathingly termed as ?replacement theologians.? The San Antonio pastor says such persons are anti-Semitic.

At its website, CUFI suggests 10 ways to bless Israel. Not one of them even hints at the gospel.

But the Bible teaches that Jews (and Gentiles) can be blessed today:

1. ?By not being offended at the gospel:

Romans 11:26 ??And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me

2. ?By turning from their sins

Acts 3:26? ?Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.

3. ?By hearing the gospel.

Romans 15:29 ??And I am sure that, when I come unto you, I shall come in the fulness of the blessing of the gospel of Christ.

4. ?By being seated in heavenly places with Jesus.

Ephesians 1:3b ?Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.

5. ?By reading the book of Revelation:

Revelation 1:3 Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.

6. ?By dying in faith.

Revelation 14:13 ?Blessed [are] the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth:

Finally, I ask. If this is a Christian organization, and not simply a secular political organization hiding behind religious nomenclature, why is there no mention of Jesus, evangelism or the gospel? What kind of hope is there for anybody apart from Jesus? How does this bless Israel?

Lyme Disease Outfoxes Deer

In some locations, the incidence of Lyme disease tracks less with the abundance of deer than it does with the disappearance of foxes. Karen Hopkin reports

Deer ticks and Lyme disease go hand-in-hand in some places. But you can?t always put the blame on Bambi. Because new research shows that the incidence of Lyme disease tracks less with the abundance of deer than it does with the disappearance of foxes. The study is in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. [Taal Levi et al., "Deer, predators, and the emergence of Lyme disease"]

To see where foxes come in, you have to look at the tick life cycle.

When deer ticks are young, they feed on small mammals like the white-footed mouse. It?s from infected rodents that the ticks pick up the bacteria that cause Lyme disease.

Foxes, of course, prey on mice and other small mammals. So fewer foxes means more mice, and potentially more disease.

To come up with that connection, researchers modeled the relative contributions of various animal populations in areas where Lyme disease is rife. And they found that, in New York State, for one, the incidence of Lyme could be directly predicted by the dearth of foxes.

The foxes were pushed out by coyotes, which have been on the rise since New York lost its wolves. Which were driven away by humans. Who now get bit by ticks.

92% Safety Not Guaranteed

All Critics (76) | Top Critics (27) | Fresh (70) | Rotten (6)

Neatly, the script embarks on one journey while dangling the possibility of another: the prospect of taking a sudden leap from comic reality into the realm of pure imagination.

"Safety Not Guaranteed" is most vibrant and vital at its edges, in the way that the characters interact with each other while waiting for something to happen.

It's brisk and assured and never begs the audience's indulgence. No time is wasted. The movie is, at every moment, either funny or pushing the story forward, or both.

The film is modest but skillful and heartfelt, spiced just so by Plaza and company.

Safety Not Guaranteed casts an enchanting spell from its opening scene.

Expectedly funny but unexpectedly touching, too.

Hope is a powerful thing and Safety Not Guaranteed delivers in its tale of longing, deliverance and connection during the here and now.

An intriguing yet erratic effort...

Less of a philosophical argument and more of a character piece driven deep into the heart by Duplass and Plaza.

Have you ever wondered what mumblecore sci-fi would look like? Wonder no more.

Rather than trying to beat Hollywood at its own game of high-tech gadgets and weaponry, director Colin Trevorrow and writer Derek Connolly achieve a sly mix of the insane and the mundane.

A character-driven piece about regret and true partnership - our basic, primal need for someone to take the journey with us even if safety is not guaranteed.

Aubrey Plaza is the best thing about this iffy mock-sci-fi doohickey.

A strange, light-hearted bit of quasi-sci-fi, with no small amount of heart.

The material is played mostly for laughs and succeeds in that regard. The undercurrent of lament in Safety Not Guaranteed, though, is what holds the film together.

If safety isn't guaranteed by the film's title, a viewer's satisfaction with this genial, warm-hearted movie pretty much can be.

One central recasting and brutal editorial session away from being a lovely little short film, where its mystery and sentiment is more easily controlled and considered.

With its well-constructed screenplay, sharp dialogue and unapologetic sincerity, this first feature from former SNL interns Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly is its own act of nostalgia...

'Madagascar 3' stampedes, 'Rock,' Sandler flop

(AP) ? Zoo animals remain hot at the box office. Singing stars and Adam Sandler are not.

Ben Stiller and his voice co-stars of "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" held on to the No. 1 spot again, with $35.5 million for the animated sequel's second weekend in domestic theaters.

Studio estimates Sunday put Ridley Scott's sci-fi adventure "Prometheus" at No. 2 again with $20.2 million.

"Madagascar 3" and "Prometheus" held off two under-achieving newcomers. The star-studded musical "Rock of Ages," whose cast includes Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Alec Baldwin, flopped at No. 3 with $15.1 million.

Sandler's "That's My Boy" bombed with $13 million, the worst showing for one of his broad comedies since the mid-1990s. "That's My Boy" came in at No. 5, behind the $13.8 million for "Snow White & the Huntsman," a film that's been out for three weekends already.

"Sure, we would have liked to have done more," said Rory Bruer, head of distribution at Sony, which released "That's My Boy" and most of Sandler's past movies. "But you've got to give it to Adam. He mixes it up. This is a really off-the-wall comedy."

"That's My Boy" stars Sandler as a guy who became a fleeting teen celebrity after getting his seventh-grade teacher pregnant and now is a middle-aged loser trying to reconnect with his son (Andy Samberg).

As with most Sandler movies, the reviews were bad, but that usually does not stop his audience of young males from showing up.

The R rating for "That's My Boy" may have cut into the movie's business, prohibiting those under 17 from seeing it without an adult. Sandler's comedies usually are rated PG-13.

But Sandler has plenty of fans in their late teens and 20s, and that crowd had little interest in "That's My Boy."

Among Sandler's mainstream live-action comedies, it was the worst debut since 1996's "Happy Gilmore," which played in far fewer theaters than "That's My Boy" and came as Sandler was just climbing to stardom. And factoring in today's higher admission prices, "That's My Boy" sold fewer tickets than "Happy Gilmore."

Some of Sandler's handful of comic dramas and other more serious movies did less business than "That's My Boy." But even his 2000 bomb "Little Nicky" opened bigger, with $16.1 million in its first weekend.

Sandler has been one of Hollywood's steadiest earners since the late 1990s, with hits such as "The Longest Yard," ''Anger Management," ''Big Daddy" and "Grown-ups" opening with more than $40 million and becoming $100 million hits.

Sony remains high on Sandler, backing his upcoming animated comedy "Hotel Transylvania," along with "Grown-ups 2."

"It's a good business to be in, the Adam Sandler business," Bruer said.

Warner Bros. had its own dud with "Rock of Ages," adapted from the stage show built around 1980s rock hits and featuring an ensemble that includes Cruise, Zeta-Jones, Baldwin, Julianne Hough and Mary J. Blige.

Dan Fellman, the studio's head of distribution, was not ready to pull the plug on the movie, saying he hoped it might hang on in subsequent weekends. "Rock of Ages" drew mostly older, female crowds, an audience that does not necessarily rush out to a movie over opening weekend.

"Musicals, there have been a couple in the summer like "Hairspray" and "Mamma Mia!", that tend to have good holding power as counter-programming. We're hoping we can get back on track," Fellman said.

"Rock of Ages" added $4.1 million in a handful of overseas markets.

Between "Rock of Ages" and "That's My Boy," Hollywood fell back into a pattern that persisted at the start of summer season in May as new movies debuted weakly, unable to dislodge strong holdovers.

The superhero tale "The Avengers" has dominated so far, remaining in the top-10 after seven weekends, its $8.8 million take raising its domestic total to $586.7 million. The film has taken in $1.4 billion worldwide.

There have been only a few other hits, including "Men in Black 3," ''Madagascar 3" and "Snow White & the Huntsman."

"That's My Boy" and "Rock of Ages" have joined Johnny Depp's "Dark Shadows" among star-driven releases that fell flat.

"It doesn't always follow that big stars bring in the big bucks," said Paul Dergarabedian, analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com. "'Madagascar' and 'Prometheus' tell you that it's about the concept more than the stars."

DreamWorks Animation's "Madagascar 3" raised its domestic total to $120.5 million after two weekends. The movie added $53 million overseas, bringing its international receipts to $157 million and its worldwide haul to $278 million.

"Prometheus," released by 20th Century Fox, lifted its domestic total to $88.9 million after two weekends. With $25.5 million overseas, "Prometheus" pushed its international revenue to $128.9 million for a worldwide haul of $218 million.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted," $35.5 million ($53 million international).

2. "Prometheus," $20.2 million ($25.5 million international).

3. "Rock of Ages," $15.1 million ($4.1 million international).

4. "Snow White & the Huntsman," $13.8 million.

5. "That's My Boy," $13 million.

6. "Men in Black 3," $10 million ($19.7 million international).

7. "The Avengers," $8.8 million ($3.9 million international).

8. "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," $2.2 million.

9. "Moonrise Kingdom," $2.18 million.

10. "What to Expect When You're Expecting," $1.3 million.

The Battle for the Amazon Heats Up Again

The Amazon rainforest is the most important patch of land on the planet. The trees have been called the lungs of the Earth and that's far more than just a metaphor: they absorb more than 2 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide per year, return oxygen in exchange and help regulate the climate of the Western Hemisphere in the process. The forest itself is the hottest of biodiversity hotspots, home to countless species of plants and animals that we have yet to discover ? and even tribes of indigenous human beings who have never been contacted by the outside world. There's a reason that "save the rainforest" became a default slogan for environmentalism in the 1980s; saving the Amazon really did mean helping to save the planet.

The good news is that over the past decade, we've been doing just that. After years of clear-cutting and slash-and-burn agriculture ate into the rainforest, deforestation has fallen to the slowest pace since government officials began keeping track in 1988. Just 2,443 sq. mi (6,327 sq. km) of forest were lost from August 2010 to July 2011 ? 78% below the most recent spike in deforestation in 2004. While lower world prices for beef and soya and a stronger Brazilian currency have helped reduce the market incentive for clearing forest for farming or cattle-raising, a recent analysis by the Climate Policy Initiative found that at least half of the recent drop in deforestation was due to tougher government policy. International pressure played a role in that, but Brazilians themselves made the real decision to protect their Amazon.

(MORE: Can Anything Save the Drying Southwest?)

That progress, however, could be lost. Last month Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff was faced with a tough choice. The lower house of Brazil's National Congress had passed a revision of the country's Forest Code, pushed by the "ruralistas" ? legislators representing Brazil's powerful agricultural interests ? that would have severely weakened legal protections for the rainforest, even granting effective amnesty to landowners who had illegally deforested areas before 2008. According to the government's Institute for Applied Economic Research, the new Forest Code might lead to the loss of as much as 190 million acres (77 million hectares) of forest.

Rousseff had until May 25 to decide whether or not to sign the bill. Environmentalists ? as well as some sectors of urban Brazilian business ? wanted her to veto the thing in its entirety while the ruralistas, who believe a new Forest Code was needed to support Brazil's burgeoning agricultural industry, demanded the whole package. It was a momentous decision for Brazil's President ? especially since the country was set to host the Rio+20 Earth Summit at the end of June.

On May 28 Rousseff issued a partial veto of the revamped Forest Code ? a compromise that managed to annoy both sides. She removed many of the bill's more controversial sections, including the amnesty provisions, and restored obligations for landowners to recover forests that were cut down illegally. But environmentalists inside and outside of Brazil have been mostly unhappy with Rousseff's half-a-loaf approach, warning especially of the dangers of deforestation along riverbanks, which is likely to encourage flooding.

(MORE: How to Feed the Planet Without Destroying It)

Previously, landowners had to keep 33 to 330 yds. (30 to 300 m) of intact forest alongside rivers, but the new rules will only require 5 to 30 yards (4.5 to 27 m). The new law also reduces the legal reserve requirement ? the proportion of land an Amazon property owner is required to maintain as forest ? and allows landowners to plant commercial species like oil palm or coffee as part of a reserve. "In environmental terms, the law should have been vetoed completely," Luiz Antonio Martinelli, an agronomist at the University of Sao Paulo, told the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper. "But we know that would be very difficult politically."

Indeed, a full veto by Rousseff would have been seen as a declaration of war on the ruralistas ? and in Brazil, just as it is in the U.S., Big Agriculture has political muscle to spare. As unhappy as many of the environmentalists are, the farm lobby has already said it will challenge Rouseff's partial veto in court. (Brazil's Congress could overturn the veto, but that seems unlikely.) But what will be even more important than the letter of the Forest Code ? however it's eventually formulated ? is whether it will actually be implemented. The Amazon is Brazil's Wild West, and the government's reach from the capital in Brasilia often exceeds its grasp. Enforcement of even the older, tougher forest law in the region was scattershot, which doesn't bode well for the pace of deforestation under a more lenient code.

If there's hope, it's that Brazil itself is changing. As it grows richer ? thanks in part to massive oil finds off the Atlantic coast ? the country will become less dependent on basic agriculture, which could help build domestic support for slowing deforestation. Twenty years ago, when it hosted the first Earth Summit, Brazil was a financial mess, a weakling on the global stage suffering from hyperinflation. Today it's a regional heavyweight with aspirations for global influence ? with a per-capita GDP that surpassed Mexico's in 2010. What's more, whatever the size of Brazil's agricultural sector, modern cultivation methods allow soya farmers and cattle ranchers to get more out of every acre, reducing the need to clear more forest for farm or pastureland. The delegates at the Rio+20 summit later this month will talk optimistically about the ability of the international community to tackle global environmental challenges in unison, but today the successes and failures that count most still occur on the national level. Brazil should lead by example, and it can start by better protecting its most valuable ? and most destructible ? possession.

Time flows uphill for remote Papua New Guinea tribe

"HERE and now", "Back in the 1950s", "Going forward"... Western languages are full of spatial metaphors for time, and whether you are, say, British, French or German, you no doubt think of the past as behind you and the future as stretching out ahead. Time is a straight line that runs through your body.

Once thought to be universal, this "embodied cognition of time" is in fact strictly cultural. Over the past decade, encounters with various remote tribal societies have revealed a rich diversity of the ways in which humans relate to time (see "Attitudes across the latitudes"). The latest, coming from the Yupno people of Papua New Guinea, is perhaps the most remarkable. Time for the Yupno flows uphill and is not even linear.

Rafael N??ez of the University of California, San Diego, led his team into the Finisterre mountain range of north-east Papua New Guinea to study the Yupno living in the village of Gua. There are no roads in this remote region. The Yupno have no electricity or even domestic animals to work the land. They live with very little contact with the western world.

N??ez and his colleagues noticed that the tribespeople made spontaneous gestures when speaking about the past, present and future. They filmed and analysed the gestures and found that for the Yupno the past is always downhill, in the direction of the mouth of the local river. The future, meanwhile, is towards the river's source, which lies uphill from Gua.

This was true regardless of the direction they were facing. For instance, if they were facing downhill when talking about the future, a person would gesture backwards up the slope. But when they turned around to face uphill, they pointed forwards (Cognition, DOI: 10.1016/j.cognition.2012. 03.007).

N??ez thinks the explanation is historical. The Yupno's ancestors arrived by sea and climbed up the 2500-metre-high mountain valley, so lowlands may represent the past, and time flows uphill.

But the most unusual aspect of the Yupno timeline is its shape. The village of Gua, the river's source and its mouth do not lie in a straight line, so the timeline is kinked. "This is the first time ever that a culture has been documented to have everyday notions of time anchored in topographic properties," says N??ez.

Within the dark confines of their homes, geographical landmarks disappear and the timeline appears to straighten out somewhat. The Yupno always point towards the doorway when talking about the past, and away from the door to indicate the future, regardless of their home's orientation. That could be because entrances are always raised, says N??ez. You have to climb down - towards the past - to leave the house, so each home has its own timeline.

"This study is an important landmark," says Pierre Dasen, an anthropologist at the University of Geneva in Switzerland who was not involved in the work. "It demonstrates both universality of cognitive processes and a fascinating cultural difference."

Lera Boroditsky of Stanford University in California agrees. "Each one of these discoveries isn't just telling us something about other people, it's telling us something about us," she says. "A lot of English speakers think that it's natural to think of time as a straight line. But that's an illusion. It doesn't have to be that way."

Attitudes across the latitudes

Timelines come in all shapes and directions. For the Aymara people of the Andes, time flows front to back. The past, which was known and hence seen, lies in front. The future - unknown and unseen - is behind (Cognitive Science, DOI: 10.1207/s15516709cog0000_62).

Over in Australia, the timeline of the Pormpuraaw, a remote Aboriginal community, runs along the east-west axis. The past is east. Time for the Pormpuraaw flows from left to right if they are facing south, right to left if they are facing north, towards the body if they are facing east, and away from the body if they are facing west (Psychological Science, DOI: 10.1177/0956797610386621).

And in China, Mandarin speakers sometimes represent time along a vertical axis, with the past above and the future below (Cognition, DOI: 10.1016/j.cognition.2010.09.010).
