8 Bit Weapon "Bits With Byte" Album Review - G4tv.com

It has been nearly two years since we've heard new music from 8 Bit Weapon. The good news is, these West Coast champions of chiptunes are back with a new set of songs which will appeal to fans of classic video gaming as well as electronic music aficionados. The Feed has taken Bits With Byte for a spin, has some sounds from it for you to hear and a link for a free download from the album.

Since we last heard from 8 Bit Weapon, the Chiptune music scene has grown noticeably, with more artists entering the scene, an expanding fan base and an increasing number of live events held where performers can play their unique sounds. Seth and Michelle Sternberger, the duo behind the buttons of 8 Bit Weapon, have definitely not been idle during this period. Since releasing Silo 64 in 2010, the duo has continued playing live, including a multi-city tour and sets at last year's E3 Expo. Bits With Byte finds 8 Bit Weapon firing on all circuits, as you can hear and see from the album's title track.

That song kicks off the 18-track album in solid-state form. Among my personal favorites from Bits With Byte is the Tron-themed "We Fight For the Users". It doesn't channel any of Wendy Carlos or Daft Punk's Tron themes, but the name is an obvious nod to the world of the Game Grid and features a bass and melody line reminiscent of early 90's European techno.

"Closer 2.0" and "Micro Boogie 2.0" are a pair of stand out vocal numbers. The first features Michelle doing a vocaloid-esque singing performance with Seth delivering his own robot-meets-Devo vocals on the latter.

But one of the absolute best reasons to add Bits With Byte to your music player of choice is "The Art of Video Games Anthem". This track was composed as entrance music for "The Art of Video Games" exhibition at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, celebrating the 40 year evolution of video games as an artistic medium, which opens next weekend in Washington, D.C.

8 Bit Weapon will also be performing live at "The Art of Video Games" during its opening weekend. If you are in the area, I highly recommend you check out the exhibition and experience 8 Bit Weapon in a live setting. Bits With Byte is available now in both download and physical form.
